Unschooling Works Because You know your Child Best
Sue Patterson started homeschooling her three children in 1996. After a year or so of curriculum, they began their unschooling journey. She has been active in the homeschooling/ unschooling community for nearly 30 years and has much to share. Her children are off on their own adventures now, happy to have had such a wonderful childhood and be fully prepared for adult life.
For years, she blogged with the title Unschooling Mom2Mom. Then in 2014, she and a few other unschooling moms expanded it to include many more ways to help families. Sue now offers to coach and mentor families around the world. Her goal is to help families see that they have all sorts of choices with their educational and parenting approaches. She helps them find practical ways to create a family life full of joy and adventure.
Sue has been there. Her own three grown unschoolers have given her a lot of opportunities to see what worked and what didn't - and she's happy to share what she's learned from the experience. She's been helping thousands of families over the past 25 years. And to make that even better, Sue knows that every family is different, learning, adjusting, and discovering ways that unschooling will work. She's able to hear the fears underneath the questions and can help you conquer what's holding you back!
Whether you're leaving the school system or switching from a more traditional homeschooling approach, Sue can help you say goodbye to power struggles and worry.
She can help you create an environment where you can connect with the kids - and they can rekindle their love of learning!
If your educational approach is filled with anger, yelling, tears and frustration - let me talk with you about unschooling.
Kids want to learn, it's just that the methods we all learned in schools don't work well!
You have options - really good ones.
We can turn this all around!
Our Family’s Journey to Unschooling
The short version…We were a mainstream military family who sent kids to school because that’s what everyone did.
But then, school wasn’t a great fit for my happy-go-lucky kid who loved to learn. It sucked the life out of him. He wanted to run, play and talk about all sorts of things that interested him. And that wasn’t going to fit in a classroom scenario. It was 1995, and at the time, my kids were 6, 4, and 1. The internet wasn’t clicking along yet. So I picked the brains of the two homeschooling families on the base and sent for catalogs. I didn’t consider what was ahead for later grades, but I thought I could SURELY handle 2nd grade.
As we packed up for our new assignment, moving from San Antonio, Texas, to Anchorage, Alaska, I grabbed my child’s school records and never enrolled him in the next location. Within a year, I had stumbled across the concept of unschooling, and we began to move in that direction.
Little by little, I shed my ideas about schooling and opened to the idea that the entire world could be our classroom. In fact, we could live as if school didn’t even exist! I have so many stories to share with you about the 25 years of living and learning alongside my children. We decided to embrace life as an adventure we wanted to dive into – together! And so we did.
